Pallet Fun Facts – History of Pallets!


2580 – 2560 BC:  Wooden sledges, an early form of pallet, are used to build the Great Pyramid in Egypt.

1920’s:  The development of motorized freight vehicles prompts the evolution from sledges to pallets.

1924:  The US grants a patent to Howard T. Hallowell’s “Lift Truck Platform.”

1937:  Gas-powered forklift trucks are invented.

1938:  George Raymond files a patent for a pallet designed to complement a new pallet jack design.

1941:  The US War Production Board issues an order to purchase 1 million pallets after extensive testing showed that the pallet-forklift combo was the most efficient way to move materials.

1960s:  The “Europallet” is standardized for commerce on the continent.
