ASAR Pallets
These types of pallets are usually block-style pallets. They are engineered to interface with robotics, conveyors, and push-back rack systems. These systems have strict tolerances for the deflection in the pallets and the location of the component parts of the pallet. Plywood Slave Boards can also be used.

Block Pallets
Block pallets have the most efficient design. They are capable of full four-way entry – compatible with forklifts, hand trucks, and walkies in all directions. Our block pallets are machine manufactured to ensure consistent quality and structural integrity. We can supply new or recycled block pallets in a variety of sizes using solid lumber or composite material blocks.

Can & Glass Pallets
Can pallets and glass pallets are primarily used in the metal container and glass container industries, respectively. They are block pallets with a 44 x 56 footprint with full 4 way access. Both of these types of pallets have solid specifications, which allows them to be recycled and reused.

CP Pallets
The Association of Plastics Manufacturers in Europe (APME) developed specifications for the European chemical industry in 1991. For environmental reasons, there was a strong need to standardize the reuse of CP pallets within the chemical industry. Berry Industrial Group Inc. was issued a registration number in 1994 for the manufacture and repair of these pallets. We have a periodic inventory of the CP-1 and CP-3 pallets.

Costco Pallets
Berry Industrial Group Inc. has been a Costco-preferred pallet supplier since 1992. During that time, we have supplied these our to Costco locations throughout the Eastern U.S., California, Canada, and Puerto Rico. We supply Costco vendors throughout the United States that ship to Costco in the U.S., England, Mexico, and Japan. The Costco pallet is a specific 48 x 40 block design with multi-trip capabilities, kiln-dried until it has a moisture content of 18% (for mold prevention); it is also ISPM 15 compliant to prevent the spread of invasive insects. Berry Industrial Group Inc. maintains an inventory of certified Costco pallets.
Whitewood Purpose Built (CUSTOM) Pallets are acceptable only when Costco determines they are a better alternative than general use pallets. Go to NLC@Costco for guidance and justification.

Cradle Pallets
Cradle pallets are designed and manufactured to prevent cylindrical containers, reels, boxes, or bags from shifting during transport. Wedges, rails, and supports are customized and fastened to the top deck of the pallet to prevent product movement.

Custom Shapes & Sizes
Call us if it’s small (18″ or less), large (240″ or more), or any size in between! Berry Industrial Group Inc. can manufacture all custom designed pallets, boxes, or platforms to transport your products without damage. We can find A PALLETable™ Solution for you.

Domestic and Export Dunnage
Dunnage (blocking, bracing & chocking) is usually 2” x 4” x RL or 2” x 6” x RL KDSYP (kiln-dried southern yellow pine) which is used to secure unit loads in rail cars, van trailers, and export containers during transport. Export Dunnage requires a different ISPM Stamp than pallets do.

Euro Pallets
The pallet described as a Euro block pallet is the Type 1-800mm x 1200mm European pool pallet. This pallet is a standardized block pallet. This is the primary pallet that is referred to as a “Euro pallet”. The other standard sizes are the Type 2-1,200 mm x 1,000 mm and Type 3-1,000mm x 1,200mm. Other types are the half, quarter, and one-eighth sizes. These pallets are produced by licensed manufacturers located almost exclusively in Europe and bear a “EUR” or “EPAL” logo. If it doesn’t have the “EUR” or “EPAL” symbol on the pallet, it is not a Euro pallet. Euro pallets are also known as E pallets. There are no certified Euro pallet manufacturers located in the United States. The UIC 435-2 allows us to reissue Euro pallets that have maintained their structural integrity and have not been altered in any way. Domestic production of a pallet with the “EPAL” stamp is in violation of international copyright law. A Euro type 1 pallet is a block-style pallet that measures 31 1/2″ x 47 1/4″.

Export Pallets
We also manufacture export pallets. Berry Industrial Group, Inc. provides the heat-treatment required for the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures, ISPM #15. All lumber used in pallets stamped with our heat treatment stamps ( for ISPM 15 requirements) and government issued IPPC# have been heat-treated to a core temperature of 56 degrees Celsius for a minimum of 30 minutes. The heat treatment is conducted in accordance with the standards established by the ALSC (American Lumber Standards Committee), and is confirmed by the manufacturer’s HT Stamp on each pallet. This treatment and the ink used for the stamp meets the ISPM #15 regulatory requirements. See Resources for participating countries.

GMA Pallet
The GMA (Grocery Manufacturers’ Association) was developed in the 1950’s with defined specifications for the purpose of consistency in a Pallet Exchange program. Unfortunately, the specifications have since been reduced and the term GMA now refers to a pallet that has a footprint of 48″ x 40″ and notched stringers, which allow entry by forklifts on all four sides and hand jacks on two sides. There are many variations of this alleged GMA when manufactured as new. The footprint remains the same but the material’s thickness, width, and species varies. When sold as recycled pallets, there are even more variations to the original standards; this makes uniformity and adherence to specifications an anomaly.

Government Pallets
Government pallets are catalogued by NSN (National Stock Number) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) part numbers. We supply current specifications and regulations on all published government pallets to you and your inspectors.

ISPM # 15
This certification was developed as a result of the Asian Long-Horned Beetle (ALHB) being introduced into the U.S. in the 1990’s by products shipped from China. Pallets carried this invasive species into the U.S., and the insects spread rapidly throughout the country because there is no natural North American predator able to neutralize or eradicate them. The ALHB devoured pallets and changed the wood fiber into sawdust. As the epidemic spread, infested trees had to be cut and burned in order to prevent the destruction of more forests. The U.S., as well as most other countries, adopted this protocol in 2005. Other invasive species are the Emerald Ash Borer, European Oak Boer, European Wood Wasp, and Brown Spruce Long Horned Beatle. There has been a continuous postponement of implementation of ISPM #15 for shipments between the U.S. and Canada because of the proximity. When the implementation date is announced, we will advise our customers.

Kiln Dried Southern Yellow Pine and Green Lumber
Kiln-dried lumber is used in pallets, dunnage, trusses, stairs, crates, and construction. There are different grades associated with kiln-dried Southern Yellow Pine, which are subsequently stamped, segregated, and marked as 1, 2, or 3 . The grading criteria has to do with grain distortion, knots, and wane. We generally use the #2 classification for our products; it is more expensive than the #3, but it generates a better yield and a higher quality pallet for our customers.
Green pine is used for those who want a product made of the least expensive trees. It is best used on non-stress bearing points and for customers who have light loads to ship and store. It sometimes warps and has a tendency to mold, especially in the warmer months. Green hardwoods have approximately 50 merchantable species harvested from North American forests. A strength characteristic is given to each species based on specific gravity, bending, and rupturing. High-, medium-, and low- density hardwoods are provided for different applications. Specifying species or a density classification requires extra sorting and processing, which adds cost to the finished products. The names are derived from how the trees reproduce – hardwoods develop from seeds and softwoods from cones.

OSB and Plywood Products
OSB (Oriented Strand Boards) are used primarily for lightweight unit loads as a barrier in construction and dunnage. Plywood can carry a substantially heavier unit load when constructed in pallets, crates & boxes. Both items are cut from panels usually 4’ x 8’ and are ISPM #15 compliant.

Point of Purchase Pallets
POP pallets are usually classified as quarter pallets (24” x 20”) or half pallets (24” x 48”). There can also be different small size combinations that customers may require. A full truckload can carry about 2,400 units of the quarter pallet or 1,200 half pallets. Many require heat treatment if they are to carry food-grade products.

Recycled Pallets
There are more than 2 billion pallets circulating throughout the United States every day. The vast majority of these pallets are recycled 48″ x 40″ pallets with a large variation of specifications. Uniformity is difficult to obtain for these pallets. Our focus is on the more specialized recycled pallets such as Euro Pallets, CP Pallets, Drum Pallets and other industry-specific sizes and types. See Resources for descriptions of recycled or reconditioned pallets.

Top Frames
Top frames are wood frames designed to protect and stabilize a palletized unit load during transport. Their sizes vary depending on the industry. They are used frequently in the can, bottle, paper, and printing industries.
